Hi, I just wanted to say that this is an interesting list. I can understand why most of the cities are on there, as those places have a heavy concentration of Japanese business interests. However, I have to say that the inclusion of Paris surprises me. Why are there so many Japanese nationals living there? Are they students? Full-time expats? Anyway, thanks for the post.

from wikipedia
Brazil is the Latin American country that has received the most ethnic Japanese immigrants, as well as the host country of the largest Japanese community outside Japan (numbering between 1.3 and 1.5 million, compared to about 800,000 in the United States). The first Japanese immigrants (791 people - mostly farmers) came to Brazil in 1908 on the Kasato Maru from the Japanese port of Kobe, moving to Brazil in search of better living conditions. Many of them (along with Chinese immigrants) ended up as laborers on coffee farms. At the time, Brazil was experiencing a shortage of farm workers and turned to European immigrants and then to an influx of Japanese workers to satisfy this demand.

I think there were many Japanese immigrants into rest of South America too. Remember Fujimori from Peru. Carole, I think there a lot of Japanese students in Shanghai too. I think same is true for Paris.

China and Japan have had close business ties for several decades ever since China liberalized its economy (well, more than the Maoist era, anyway). Both are economic giants, though China will probably surpass Japan in economic “importance” on a global level in a short amount of time (the opposite is still true now…I think, don’t quote me on that!)
