20 Mar 05 This newspaper doesn’t hate blogs

With all the traditional media vs blog thing going on, it is nice to see Hindustan Times encouraging readers to blog about the news stories.

Argh! I doubt we will ever see Singapore media go beyond the “dollars and sense” of technology. They probably view blogs as a threat rather than an opportunity to journalism, that’s why they never offered “Blog This” or even RSS feeds from local newspapers. Heck, being situated overseas in Buffalo, New York, they even now charge a subscription fee for reading their ST Interactive online newspaper… my gosh. Come on Singapore, if you cry so much about losing manpower to other countries, wake up and see why. Being economic centric will be your downfall… I seriously hope the next generation of leaders will recognize that somethings go beyond commodity. What virtues are Singapore teaching? Definitely not generosity!

    Thanks Kevin

Yes, Kevin I was really puzzled by Strait Times decision to for the $$ this way. They could have gone for localises ads. Like whenever there is a story on China, they could shown mini ads of travel services offering trips to china. If there is a story about Choa Chu Kang, they could show ads from some small businesses from that area on that page.

    Yes OOCC,
Blogs and news should be good friends, they could even give some print space to good blog posts once in a while.

Come on, let’s be realistic. Singapore is Chinese, and acts no different after all of these years outside of China, and outside of Mao’s China, than the Chinese do today.

Only in a Chinese run country would you be charged for a tissue or napkin to wipe your mouth and hands at a restaurant.

So, really it should be no surprise that ST is charging to read it on-line. What you should be more surprised at is the deference of us Singaporeans at this. That is what needs to be changed. We create the market, and we can change the market, to bad we are to complacent to ever try.

If Singapore wants to grow, it must start being Singapore, and stop being China.
