Chongqing is a municipality located in Central China. It used to be a part of Sichuan province but now it is a special city like Beijing and Shanghai (and Tianjin).
Chongqing is also unique in the way that you will not find as many bicycles as other cities in China. This is because the city is set on several hills. The roads and lanes rise and fall regularly making bicycling hard.
These stick-men help people to carry their groceries or other heavy things. You can find them in shopping areas, waiting with their long bamboo poles. Once you hire them, They will tie your stuff to the pole, haul it up their shoulders and walk along with you to your place.

Recently myrick.ca might have encountered these stickmen as you mentioned. He was confused, but I think he mistook the stick man’s gestures for the offering of a “fishing pole”. Left a comment there pointing to your post here. Refer to http://www.myrick.ca/2005/03/inexplicable.html
well, in Chinese, it’s called “棒棒儿“~~haha~~yes, there are many of them there in Chongqing~~and will cost around 5RMB to get their service~~:-)
Nope, the guy I encounted was tryying to sell me a fishing pole. It was a shiny blue metallic rod and reel. The guy next to him was trying to sell binoculars.
as a matter of fact there are fewer and fewer stick-men in the centre of chongqing cuz most of the big supermarkets and soem stores offer service including sendin goods to customers’ and it is mainly because the policy the local government carried out is fabulous for them to go back home growing corn and crops to feed themselves instead of being mouthed off at by the badly-educated citizens. To be added , there are certain companies employing professional stick-men.obviously the service they let you enjoy is far better and they even have business cards like most of the so-called white-collared hia hia .if you come to chongqing again do have call them to help you to experience in a totally different way
