01 Mar 05 Safety poster from India

I came across this site (via tim Boucher: Occult Investigator blog) that has a cool safety poster from India. I myself don’t remember seeing this particular poster, seems to me that it is from Delhi (there is one picture there that shows the green Delhi public bus). We had some other posters in our class similar in style and artwork to the one featured here. We used to have lots of fun sneaking into the class after school, sticking alternative captions on them and waiting for the commotion next morning.

The kite season would come in January. For the next month or two there were kites everywhere. People would spend most evenings and weekends on the terrace challenging other kite flyers to kite fights - the two kites would draw closer and try to cut each other’s lines. The line or string we used was called manja it was coated with crushed glass to make it sharp. During the kite season it was usual to have cuts on our fingers and palms, in fact it was something you showed off and bragged about the next day in the school. The kites that would get cut glided down and kids would try to snatch them with these long poles that they always kept handy. Once in a while a greedy kid would reach for the kite and tumble down injuring or killing himself (most kite flyers were boys).

Check out the page. The author has put up some funny images from the poster. The site has other cool retro stuff too.
